Postcard from Bremerhaven

Having been watching the property market in Bremerhaven for the last 3 years, seeing its declining population and coupled with the high unemployment rate, if someone had told me I’d be spending the early hours of my Monday mornings driving to Stansted, catching the ‘red eye’ flight to the German North Sea coast, viewing properties there, I’d have laughed and told them to lay off the Becks. But that is exactly what I’ve been doing for the last 5 months and I’m pleased to report that over the last 2 years, the city has truly turned itself around, in true Germanic fashion.

The city’s industry prior and during the war was primarily military ship building, so was an obvious strategic target for bombing from Allied Forces, circa 1939-1945; however due to its position on the North Sea coast, it was also a port that the Allied Forces wanted to take control of, and use as an entry point into Germany and mainland Europe. As a result, the American military were here until the late 90’s.

After the war, the city remained a ship building hub (just not the military kind…) and a large fishing harbour.

Since the decline of the fishing industry, due to quotas being slashed, and ship building now concentrated in the Far East, the city has had to reinvent itself, and has done in epic fashion. Some remnants of the fishing industry still remains (Bremerhaven is a fish finger lover’s heaven..), but the focus is now on renewable energy, namely wind energy, and the container port.
